Synopsis
Burnt Orange is a ballad-like play, tragedy and comedy mixed with absurd.
The play takes place in a small town before the First World War. Mrs. Klein takes her 20 years old daughter Marina to get treatment from a psychoanalyst, Doctor Fromm.
The sensitive and linguistically gifted Marina cannot bear the ‘upbringing’, which her manufacturer parents call love; her mother is a domestic monster, her father is withdrawn. The psychoanalyst attempts to get inside Marina’s emotional world, into her dreams and the ‘Double Dutch’, which at the beginning of the play is the only language she will consent to speak.
In the play, Manner satirises the psychiatrist’s methods of helping this loveless person. Marina ends up pyromaniac, in defiance of the institution called ‘home’.
The Manner scholar Tuula Hökkä has commented: ‘In her diffidence concerning speech and her habit of listening to the unsaid, Manner is thoroughly Finnish. Silence provides for her, in the Finnish manner, a spacious home. As a portrayer of the silent or the silenced, she is a deeply social, humanist writer.’
