New Plays from Finland

Sofia Aminoff

Playwright, dramaturg and translator Sofia Aminoff (born 1982) hails from a Swedish-speaking background in the bilingual district of Tammisaari. She has a Master’s degree in Nordic Literature from the University of Helsinki, as well as a Master’s degree from the Theatre Academy in Helsinki, where she studied dramaturgy and playwriting.

Aminoff’s credits in theatre work include an internship at Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern (Royal Dramatic Theatre) in Stockholm, dramaturgical work at Svenska Teatern in Helsinki, and playwriting for Labbet. In 2019, her participation in the UNO project for producing new drama texts in Finland resulted in Den lysande tiden (The Blazing Time). The play opened at Valtimonteatteri in October 2021. Aminoff has also done extensive work in translation from Finnish to Swedish.

Upholding the tradition of text-based drama is one of Aminoff’s main interests in the theatre field; she sees a need to strengthen the practice of reading and analysing play texts. This interest is also reflected on the doctoral dissertation she is currently working on, about Hagar Olsson’s dramatic works. Aminoff also wishes to build more contact between Finnish and Swedish speaking drama. As a playwright, she names psychoanalysis, feminism, intertextuality and genrebending as particular areas of exploration. The relationship between spoken words and the unspoken is often present in her works.
