New Plays from Finland
Mother (Homoäiti) is a monologue about becoming a parent, about eternal parenthood and about ageing. It is about the realisation that our own parents are just as helpless as we are and about the process of joining this band of helpless elders ourselves.
It’s also about mortality, the passage of time. About the fact that our own children, too, will grow old and how, as their parents, we’ll have no part to play in their old age.
Mother offers a frank and unsentimental depiction of motherhood: what it means to spend all day alone with your kids and never have time just for you. To feel desperate and jealous of people with time to sit and drink coffee, to envy people whose lives seem simpler and easier than your own. And to know that, as imperfect as you are, to your child you are everything.
