Digital Technology and Performing Arts Fellowships, Germany

The Academy for Theater and Digitality is a model project of the Theater Dortmund for digital innovation, artistic research, technical education and training. Together with the Academy’s staff fellows investigate the possibilities of digital technologies for the performing arts: they explore innovative technologies, changing work structures, and new narrative forms, and discuss what it means to be an artist today at the interface between the performing arts and the latest technologies.

The Academy is currently calling for applications for the research period running September 2021 to January 2022. The call is addressed to people interested in researching artistic-technical contexts in digital narratives in theatrical spaces and their practical implementation. Postgraduates from artistic and/or technical fields of the performing arts are expected to participate, who want to research and work in digital methods (motion capture, coding, MR, VR, AR, robotics, computer science, etc.).

The fellowships are intended to give theater professionals and technicians the opportunity to start planned research projects, to realise designs and to continue or complete their ongoing projects. The fellowship is intended to enable the fellows to concentrate on their artistic / artistic-technical / technical-artistic work without economic or material constraints.

The scholarship is a residency scholarship; two thirds of the five-month scholarship period (100 calendar days) are to be spent at the Academy in Dortmund.

The Academy offers:

  • Contribution to the cost of living in the form of a monthly stipend of 1,600€.

  • For the duration of the stay the academy finances the renting of appropriate living space by the scholarship holders incl. additional rental costs (such as electricity, water, heating). The maximum amount including additional costs may not exceed 750€ / month / person all incl.
