Sofi Oksanen (born 1977) is a commentator of socio-political issues who has approached the topic both in her works and in the media.
In spring 2007, Oksanen's debut play Puhdistus (Purge) premiered at the Finnish National Theatre. A year later, her own novelisation of the play gained her the 2008 Finlandia Prize.
The lives of women have formed a central topic for Oksanen. She has also focused on Estonia’s recent history in her series entitled Quartet, which so far includes the works Stalinin lehmät (Stalin’s Cows, 2003), Puhdistus (Purge, 2007) and Kun kyyhkyset katosivat (When the Doves Disappeared, 2013).
