Minna Nurmelin is a freelance playwright and director from Helsinki, Finland. After graduating with a Master of Arts degree in Directing from Theatre Academy Helsinki she has been working as a playwright and director.
Many of Nurmelin’s pieces have been created through devising. They are often about identity, abandonment and the need for love and range in style from physically visual to minimalistic, dialogue-based theatre. Her work focuses on women. Women who can be irritating, inconsistent, strong-willed, or then again not, sensitive or thick-skinned, but who are always complex and vibrant.
Nurmelin has been shifting her artistic method from group-based work to independent playwriting.
Remember me (2012), a two-hander which brings together an estate agent in the early stages of dementia and a photographer going through the trauma of divorce. This tragicomedy about the loss and rediscovery of one’s identity was hugely popular with both the critics and the public. Remember me has been staged at New York Fringe Festival 2016.
Minna Nurmelin’s play Dreamteam (2014), takes an ironic look at the vagaries of employment, life management and modern therapy. The play took part in Global Female Voices festival organized at Arcola Theatre in London.
