A Few Words About Ulla depicts the diverse dimensions of isolation and contact. From the seclusion of her apartment, a young woman, Allu, observes her classmate Ulla, who lives across from her. She knows obsessively when Ulla goes out, what kind of a rice paper lamp shade she has, and also notices immediately, when Ulla is hosting a party she hasn’t been invited to. Everything is centered around Ulla and her needs. The young woman is ready to trade in Ulla’s soon-to-expire sliced bread for fresher one, because what wouldn’t you do for a friend. She plays the lottery with numbers that all relate to Ulla in some way.
Eeva Turunen’s lyrical and verbally playful text depict the life of the main character through small, mundane details. Loneliness becomes a state of fear that the main character tries to conceal with her fantasies. Fear turns into a longing for love and daydreams that anyone can relate to. She is so close to Ulla, but still faraway in the depths of the neighboring building. Just one doorbell ring away.
A Few Words About Ulla is the winner of the Finnish National Monologue Competition in 2015.
