The scene is set at an underground station. “The central, enduring image of the play is this: people waiting for a train.”
At an underground station, layers of time and history intertwine. We see two people meet, we witness a love that existed in a previous life, we watch a couple separate. A minor crime is committed along the way too, an essential ingredient in any good story. The events condense into memories as, amidst their troubles, the characters seek a connection with one another, no matter how tenuous.
Knowing and self-aware, Underground Diary (Maanalainen päiväkirja) has a lyrical structure. The story is narrated through the characters’ voices and diary entries. In the entries, the dates become vague, time itself begins to dissolve and finally no one is quite sure whether the events actually happened to them or not.
Ultimately, everything keeps coming back to that underground station.
