Synopsis

Characters: 11 male, 4 female

The Emperor Augustus is dying without having cleared his succession. Already around his death bed his wife Livia and her son Tiberius raise the issue when a boy arrives claiming to be the son of God and awaking Augustus to new life. In the course of the following scenes, Augusts’ and Livia’s plans to single out a successor diverge bringing death upon Augustus’ only grandson Posthumus, the people’s favourite Germanicus and Augustus’ daughter who has been made fertile again by the boy and who is carrying a potential heir to the throne. Finally Augustus donates the Vatican’s plot of land for the Kingdom of God which he notarises as a sovereign state. Then he dies again whishing that he be not awoken this time. He is succeeded by Tiberius, Livia’s son who makes tabula rasa by overseeing the death of Germanicus’ wife and ordering the killing of the murderous Prefect Sejanus. In the meantime, the son of God has disappeared and there is no documentation of him because History who kept records throughout the play did not consider him worthy to be written into history.
