Gymnastics Girls is a theatrical performance about aestethic Group gymnastics. It is based on the personal experiences of current actors and former gymnasts Katariina Havukainen, Ella Lahdenmäki and Inkeri Hyvönen. At the heart of the performance are questions about how gymnastics can affect girls' self-esteem and self-image.
Although the show is about aesthetic group gymnastics, it’s target audience is broader: anyone who has ever practised something, or simply has a body and some kind of relationship with it, can see themselves in the performance and relate to it.
ELLA
We are all former gymnasts.
INKERI
Aestethic group gymnastics has been our entire youth.
KATA
Just as it has been the youth of thousands and thousands of Finnish girls, because it is Finland's most popular sports for girls and women.
INKERI
And Finland is the best!
ELLA
We have multiple world champions!
INKERI
Yet no one knows anything about this sport!
ELLA
That's why we wanted to make a theater performance about it.
INKERI
We also wanted to make this performance because this sport has not left any of us alone, even though we stopped gymnastics about 20 years ago.
ELLA
Even though we didn’t knew each other before, there was immediately the feeling that WE DO, that we REALLY share something. Something that only another gymnast can understand.
