75 amazing plays from around the world
The World on Stage project was initiated by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, supported by the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland, and coordinated by TINFO. The project was set up to inspire theatres in Finland to stage plays primarily from countries outside of the core Anglosphere, that are less accessible. In addition, special focus was placed on the Nordic region. The advisory board recommended 25 plays a year, and theatres were able to seek funding for their translation and production.
The advisory board was made up of producer, translator Eeva Bergroth (2022), author Hassan Blasim (2022), playwright, dramaturge E. L. Karhu (2023-2024), playwright, dramaturge Marie Kajava (2023-2024), director Davide Giovanzana (2022-2024), playwright, dramaturge and translator Elli Salo (2022-2024), TINFO's director Linnea Stara, and playwright, director Saara Turunen (2022-2024).
We have so far seen around ten productions staged through the project in Finland, with more to come during this current and forthcoming seasons. Theatres have been able to seek funding also for other plays than the onces recommended by the advisory board.
We hope that the plays will inspire other theatres outside of Finland as well, and that these amazing, contemporary plays will find themselves on stages across the world in the future.
